Obsessed with Wednesday? 13 Whimsy Goth ideas for your home
Last time we saw her, Wednesday Addams was stomping the shadowy halls of Nevermore Academy, navigating mysteries, monsters, and a smattering of adolescent angst.
Now, everyone’s favourite deadpan detective is back on our screens – with part one of series two just dropped on Netflix and part two following on 3rd September.
While we’re already hooked on the deliciously twisty plot, we’re also becoming obsessed with the show’s gloriously gothic interiors.
Nevermore has never looked more dramatic.
From blood-red velvet and brooding candelabras to secret passageways and scowling gargoyles, the sets this season are every inch as theatrical and otherworldly as we hoped.
New Principal Barry Dort’s (Steve Buscemi) office retains its full baroque splendour, while Rotwood Cottage, previously occupied by Marilyn Thornhill (Christina Ricci), has been given the Morticia Addams treatment and the Barbicore essence replaced with a dark sense of domesticity.
It’s all a nod to a trend experts are describing as Whimsy Goth.
According to Pinterest, searches for “gothic home ideas” and “whimsigoth” have seen significant weekly, monthly and yearly increases.
The influence of TV and film on our homes is undeniable, with many people finding inspiration for their own décor after seeing something they love on screen.
“The Whimsy Goth look is a creative mix of Victorian gothic elegance and playful, fantastical touches,” explains interior designer, Milena Vallier from My Bespoke Room.
“It’s maximalist in spirit with rich colours, ornate details, layered textiles and a mix of old-world and eclectic decor.
“It’s not about being dark for the sake of it; it’s about mood, mystery, and character.”
Wednesday Addams’s world – all black lace, antique curiosities, shadowy lighting and unexpected details – embodies the style perfectly. But it’s not all doom and gloom.
“The whimsical part brings in softer elements: flickering candlelight, botanical prints, mystical motifs and nature-inspired décor,” Milena adds.

Why is Whimsy Goth so popular right now?
“In an age of mass minimalism and digital overload, Whimsy Goth offers something deeply sensory, immersive and nostalgic,” she continues.
“It invites you to slow down, nest, and create a home that feels a bit like stepping into a storybook, or a Tim Burton film.
“There’s also a generational pull: Millennials and Gen Z grew up with The Addams Family, Harry Potter and Beetlejuice – all of which live in that same enchanted-yet-eerie design space.
“With Wednesday reviving that aesthetic in a fresh, fashion-forward way, it’s no surprise the style is catching on again.”
What makes Wednesday’s interiors so compelling isn’t just the macabre styling, however, it’s the way it reflects each character’s quirks.
Enid’s bubblegum-hued side of the dorm, for example, still bursts with unfiltered optimism and over-the-top maximalism.
So, whether you find yourself craving a moody, Castlecore aesthetic à la Wednesday or something more exuberantly offbeat like Enid’s dopamine-drenched palette, we’ve rounded up some ways to help you summon the Wednesday look at home.

Start with cocooning colours
One way to channel the moody elegance of Wednesday’s interiors at home is by adopting a cocooning colour palette – think inky charcoals, midnight blues, forest greens and rich oxblood reds that wrap a room in atmospheric depth.
“These tones instantly create a cosy, dramatic backdrop,” explains Milena.
“Use them on walls, in upholstery, or as accent pieces like cushions or throws.”
Kunal Trehan, interior designer and founder of Touched Interiors agrees these dark yet warm shades create atmosphere and set the stage for a layered, expressive space.
“Matte finishes or chalky paints can enhance the depth,” he adds.
If colour drenching your room in a dark hue feels a step too far, Victoria Robinson, style and trend expert at Hillarys, suggests painting a feature wall in a dramatic shade.
“Or layer in dark velvet cushions and throws for instant Addamscore impact,” she adds.
Moody wallpaper is a great way to evoke gothic drama too.
“Opt for patterns like stripes, deep florals, or damask in deep shades to instantly add a gothic feel,” suggests Liam Cleverdon, interior expert, and director at Flooring King.
“Painting a ceiling in a rich colour also works well, adding a cocooning feel to the space.

Layer, layer, layer
Layering rich textures, from velvet and bouclé to aged wood and antique brass, is another key way to bring the Wednesday aesthetic home, adding depth, drama and a touch of gothic romance to any space.
“This is a style built on texture,” says Milena.
“Combine velvets with lace, heavy knits with polished wood, aged metals and soft silks.
“Layer rugs, drapes and cushions for a room that feels lived-in and a little decadent.”
Kunal says fringed cushions, heavy drapes and vintage lace, tactile elements add a romantic edge to the look.
“Pair these with aged metals, distressed woods or dark marble to introduce a sense of timeworn charm,” he adds.
Mix in antique and unique pieces
To truly capture the Wednesday look, mix in antique and one-of-a-kind pieces – think ornate mirrors, curious collectibles and timeworn furniture that feel as though they’ve been plucked from a mysterious attic or forgotten manor.
“Scour vintage markets or charity shops for ornate mirrors, candle holders, old books, or slightly strange art,” suggests Milena.
“Whimsy Goth thrives on storytelling, each object should feel like it has a past (or a secret).”

Incorporate botanical and mystical motifs
Pressed flowers, ivy, mushrooms, moths, snakes and celestial symbols all fit the Wednesday aesthetic and help ground your space in a sense of history and mystery, while also nodding to the show’s eerie, enchanted world.
“Frame vintage illustrations, add embroidered pillows with magical themes, or simply use fresh foliage and dried flowers in curious arrangements,” recommends Milena.
Play with dramatic lighting
Lighting plays a crucial role in capturing the Wednesday aesthetic – think low, atmospheric glows from vintage-style wall sconces, candelabras or stained glass lamps that cast moody shadows and enhance the space’s dark, romantic charm.
“Lamps with fringed shades and coloured bulbs in purple or red can give a moody, theatrical glow,” Milena adds.

Add in bold, statement art
Artwork is a powerful way to weave the Wednesday aesthetic into your home, adding instant atmosphere and personality.
In the show, Nevermore’s interiors are filled with brooding oil portraits, surreal ink drawings and natural curiosities – from taxidermy to botanical studies – all of which reflect the school’s darkly academic tone.
To channel the same effect, look for art that nods to Victorian portraiture, moody landscapes and mystical symbols – pieces that feel storied, strange and just a little bit spellbinding.
“Gallery walls of eclectic prints, from gothic portraits to surreal illustrations, help define the space,” explains Milena.
“Look for work from independent artists or find vintage prints online.”
She also recommends embracing the unexpected. “Taxidermy (real or faux), skulls, crystals, or even a slightly odd doll’s head on a shelf, the unexpected is part of the fun,” she explains.
“Add one or two conversation-starting pieces that spark curiosity.”
Styling is key too. Kunal suggests displaying curiosities like antique candlesticks, apothecary jars, skull motifs or dark florals.
“These details should feel curated, not themed,” he adds.

Mix in darkly, dreamy furniture
Opt for furniture that blends elegant silhouettes with unexpected details like a velvet chaise in deep plum, a carved side table with claw feet, or a curio cabinet filled with peculiar treasures – pieces that feel both enchanting and ever-so-slightly eccentric.
“Furniture should feel deliberate,” says Kunal.
“Arched silhouettes, fluted details, claw-foot tables or anything that feels a little eccentric but refined.
“Oversized mirrors, especially with ornate or dark frames, reflect light while adding drama.”
Introduce nature with a mystical twist
Bringing in elements of nature, from trailing ivy and dried flowers to twisted branches or fungi-inspired décor, helps soften the darkness of the Wednesday look, adding an organic, slightly wild edge that echoes Nevermore’s deep connection to the natural (and supernatural) world.
“Bring softness and a sense of the unexpected with oversized ferns, trailing ivy or even black tulips if you’re feeling theatrical,” suggests Kunal.
“Plants contrast beautifully against the darker tones and help breathe life into the scheme.”

Embrace spiritual scent
Scent is a subtle yet powerful way to add a waft of Wednesday to your interiors – think smoky sandalwood, aged leather, spiced florals or earthy notes like moss and patchouli that conjure old libraries, moonlit forests and a hint of mystery.
“Start with sculptural candles in moody tones like black and deep plum, or soften the look with classic white for contrast,” suggests Ana-Maria Guiu, founder of Interlude Candles.
“Incorporate playful shapes like ghosts and mummies to bring a touch of seasonal whimsy while still keeping things elevated.
“These eye-catching designs, paired with vintage style holders, tarnished brass accents, and layered textures like velvet or lace, strike the perfect balance between eerie and elegant.
“Whether styled on a mantle, stacked books, or in a dimly lit corner, they instantly set the scene for a darkly romantic and characterful space.”

Incorporate some Wednesday-esque window dressings
To complete the Whimsy Goth look, Victoria recommends classic shutters in dark finishes or dramatic, floor-length curtains.
“Heavy fabrics not only channel the Addams’ aesthetic,” she says.
“They also create a cosy, cocooning feel – ideal for movie nights.”
Mix up some monochrome magic
Monochrome is a simple yet striking way to tap into the Wednesday aesthetic.
From inky blacks and chalky whites to stormy greys, a limited palette creates a moody, cohesive backdrop that lets textures, shapes and statement pieces take centre stage.
“Wednesday’s signature black and white style is timeless,” says Victoria.
“Try monochrome striped rugs or checkered flooring for a subtle nod to her iconic wardrobe.”

Flooring with dramatic effect
For a Wednesday-inspired look underfoot, opt for flooring with a sense of drama and heritage – think dark-stained wood, checkerboard tiles, or aged stone that adds depth, character, and a hint of gothic grandeur to your space.
“Dark or wood-effect flooring is a natural choice for creating a signature Tim Burton interior aesthetic as it’s moody and full of character,” explains Liam.
“Whether you’re aiming for full gothic drama or a softer whimsy gothic aesthetic, flooring plays a vital role in setting the overall tone of the room.”
Liam suggests choosing rustic engineered wood in finishes like aged oak or opting for Georgian-style parquet LVT in deep tones to evoke a sense of historic grandeur.
“These materials offer an authentic, timeworn charm that brings character into the space, all while having the benefits of high durability,” he adds.
“Dark wood flooring brings an unmistakable sense of atmosphere, offering the perfect visual anchor for interiors inspired by gothic or whimsy aesthetics.
“Its deep tones add both drama and warmth, echoing the timeless elegance of grand old manor houses.”
For an added layer of texture and richness, Liam recommends pairing this flooring with vintage-style rugs in deep tones like burgundy, forest green, or a midnight blue to create quiet drama.

A final thought
You don’t have to go full gothic castle to embrace the Whimsy Goth aesthetic.
“Even one corner, a reading nook, a hallway, a bedroom accent wall, can transport you into Wednesday’s world,” says Milena.
“It’s about setting a mood that’s creative, layered, and unapologetically you.”
As Kunal points out the Whimsy Goth style isn’t about going full gothic, it’s about balancing the eerie with the elegant, the dramatic with the delicate.
“A home that whispers rather than screams,” he adds.
