Panel drenching: the hot new interior design trend

Panel drenching is the latest interior buzz phrase that’s taking the world by storm, but what is it and how can we achieve it in our homes?

The experts at Panels by Sofia explains all…

What is panel drenching?

Drenching is defined as dominating a space by covering it in a specific colour, pattern, material or texture.

Panel drenching is a great way to combine a love of texture and style while creating a stunning aesthetic that stands out.

Drenching as a term has taken over decorating in recent years, with other methods including colour drenching, tile drenching, pattern drenching and more. Panel drenching is the latest in the line.

Summa Costandi, co-founder at decorative wall panel company, Panels by Sofia explains: “Panel drenching is the latest trend in the bold and maximalist approach to home décor.

“It’s a great way to create a cohesive and immersive space and involves installing panelling on one or more of your walls and coordinating this on other key features and surfaces.

“Adding texture is a really popular way of transforming your home and we’re seeing designs such as fluting and ribbed homeware everywhere, including on cupboards, storage units, accessories and walls.

“Panel drenching is the perfect way to bring this all together and create a beautifully harmonised space.”

4 ways to bring panel drenching into your home

Are you sold on the concept?

The experts share four unique ways you can embrace the new trend in your own home.

1. Choose your design carefully

When choosing wall panels, consider the overall style you’re looking to create.

Summa explains: “For a traditional, country home aesthetic, heritage wall panels such as tongue and groove, bead and butt or shaker style will help to bring a classic charm.

“This will create a timeless finish.

“Alternatively, ribbed and fluted designs are very on-trend and great for adding elegance to a room. These use interesting textures to create a sophisticated and stylish look.

“For those who love modern, simplistic designs, opt for slat wall panels that use clean lines to create a seamless finish.

“If you’re feeling daring, you could even pair two designs or materials together, such as slat wall with bead and butt panels.”

2. Experiment with the placement of your panels

Wall panels are a great way to get creative when decorating your space.

There are plenty of options on how and where it’s best to fit panels so the world is your oyster.

Summa advises: “First of all, decide which walls you’re going to panel.

“Panel drenching is all about maximalism so don’t be afraid to be bold and panel two or more walls or surfaces. You could even do it in the whole room if you’re feel brave.

“Another great way of embracing this trend is to install full-height panelling, as this helps to add depth, particularly in large spaces.

“If you’re using a panel design that features clean lines, it’s also a fantastic way of creating the illusion of more space.

“This is because it draws the eye upwards, making walls appear taller.”

3. Coordinate your walls with key features

Wall panels aren’t just for walls you know, they can be added to other surfaces to co-ordinate texture and design.

“Consider giving some of the other features in your room a makeover, using the same panel design as the one on your walls.

“Fluted panels are great for this as they’re so on-trend right now and the delicate design won’t overwhelm the space,” explains Summa.

She continues: “There are a few unique ways to embrace this trend in every room of the home.

“Panels can be fitted to kitchen cupboards or islands or used to transform a wardrobe or dresser in the bedroom.

“They could also be used to upgrade a fireplace in the living room or even fitted to window recesses for a full, cohesive look.”

4. Team up with other tones and textures

Panel drenching is all about adding depth to your home with new textures and materials.

The right finishing touches will help to elevate your home.

Summa says: “Accessories and textures will make your wall panels stand out and bring the space to life.

“Pair your panels with natural materials such as wood or stone accents and plenty of natural fibres, to create a sense of luxury.

“Adding a few hints of your favourite metallic, such light fixtures, railings or other fittings will add personality and style to the space.

“Finally, don’t forget to add a few plants or greenery for a truly harmonised home.”
