5 spooky plants to add to your Halloween décor this year

Halloween is just around the corner, and the celebration is bigger than ever.

It’s become an almost month long celebration, competing with Easter to become our second biggest event – second only to Christmas.

Halloween trees are now commonplace, boo basket gift sharing between family and friends part of the tradition, and now, alongside the classic pumpkin – it’s time to up our decoration game.

Spooky plants are now on our radar.

Of course, we’re not doing away with the traditional carved pumpkin (alongside a visit to the pumpkin patch to select the perfect one), but we’re adding spooky plants to our schemes.

Not only will they outlast the pumpkin, but certain plants can also add a creepy vibe to your home, which is ideal for spooky season.

Spooky plants

We got the lowdown on the best spooky plants for this Halloween, plus advice on how to keep them looking good for longer.

Black Velvet dipped snake plant

Nothing says Halloween like black decorations, and this black velvet dipped snake plant definitely fits the bill.

The leaf tips are dipped in black velvet and it arrives in a matching black pot.

Lead horticulturist at Beards and Daisies, Connor Towning explains: “This is the goth of the houseplant world. It’s happiest when you ignore it.

“Simply let the soil dry out completely before watering, and it copes with lower light which is great for this time of year.

“Your dim hallway will be perfectly sufficient.”

This makes it an ideal addition to your Halloween decorating scheme.

They do require constant moisture though, so ensure the soil is never dry by keeping them well watered.

The massive black and purple heart shaped leaves and huge size make this the spooky plant for the season.

Black elephant ear plants like bright, indirect sunlight and prefer partial shade to full sun when outdoors, which is ideal for this time of year.

They don’t like the cold though, so best to keep them indoors if you can – maybe near a humidifier.

Corpse flower

Also known as a venus flytrap, but lets face it – this is the superior spooky plant name, the corpse flower is known for trapping and eating insects.

This is very on brand for the season!

It will add a touch of fun to your Halloween set up

but it does require a lot of heat and light, so you’ll have to crank up the thermostat to keep it happy.

You should also invest in a humidifier to keep the optimum setting for it, and try and provide bright, indirect light for a few hours each day as a minimum.
