Bird baths: how to keep birds visiting and the best buys

At this time of year, it is a joy to watch the birds escape the warm weather and enjoy a splash in your bird bath.
You might have spent time cleaning and getting the bird bath prepped for a sunny summer of birdwatching only to find they aren’t interested.
This may be because you’ve made a mistake which has discouraged the birds from your garden (unintentionally of course).

The water is too deep
We can be mistaken to think that more equates to better, but too much can often ruin something, especially when it comes to bird baths.
Ideally a bird bath should be shallow, with a water depth of no more than 10cm to allow each type of bird to bathe at their preferred depth.
You could also add stones to form different water levels to help each type of bird and creature to get in and out of the bird bath.
Adding stones and pebbles to your bird bath will also make it friendly for bees, as they can be thirsty, too!
The bird bath is too slippery
Installing a bird bath made of slick or slippery material could be another reason the birds are avoiding it.
A bird bath needs to have texture, so that birds can grip it while they’re enjoying, and not slip into it.
Something with a little perch or stones for them to grab onto is perfect.
The water hasn’t been changed often enough
Bird baths get dirty very quickly, and can actually become dangerous for birds if not regularly cleaned.
It’s best practice to rinse it each morning to remove the build-up of any droppings, dead leaves and other debris. You can then refill with clean water, but remember to keep it at 10cm maximum!
It isn’t being cleaned properly
Alongside replenishing water and clearing it out, you must remember to actually clean the bird bath.
Once a week, give it a good scrum to remove the algae and dirt build-up.
You can use diluted household cleaners, but make sure to rinse it out to make sure there are no traces of chemicals in the bird bath.
It’s in the wrong place
The birds might not be visiting your bird bath simply because it’s in the wrong position.
Leaving it exposed to direct sunlight or without any protection from predators could be the worst position.
Birds will only use a bird bath if they feel safe, and they can become preoccupied so are left more vulnerable.
Clear visibility is needed so they can keep an eye out for predators.
Additionally you should have bushes or trees nearby so they can move over for cover if needed.
Keeping it away from sunlight will also avoid the water becoming too hot, as well as slowing evaporation to allow the water to last longer.
This means algae won’t grow as quickly, too, and keep the bath cleaner for longer.
