The beer hack to help you get rid of slugs

As any budding gardener will know, the sight of slugs on your growing fruit and vegetables is incredibly frustrating.

Luckily, there are plenty of ways to keep slugs and other pests away without using harsh chemicals.

Huw Richards, GARDENA ambassador and author shares what of his favourite hacks for getting rid of slugs – setting up a slug pub!

Huw told us: “Setting up a slug pub is an inexpensive and easy way to get slimy critters away from the produce you’re growing, especially when using leftover beer.

“Like lots of people, when slugs catch a whiff of beer, they can’t stay away!

“The yeast in the alcohol will draw them away from your plants, and they’ll end up in a pint instead.”

How to make a slug pub

This step-by-step guide will show you how to create your own slug pub in your outdoor space…

You will need:

  • A small container (old yoghurt tub or butter tub will work well)
  • Beer or homemade yeast mix
  • A small trowel

Instructions:

  1. Dig a shallow hole in the corner of your garden that’s far away from your plants.
  2. Place your container in the shallow hole so that the rim is just below the soil level. This will make sure the slugs can easily just crawl in.
  3. Pour in your beer, filling the container halfway to the top
  4. Leave overnight, in the morning you will see the results. Empty and refill as you need to.

Huw said of the method: “You might need to test a few different methods for getting rid of slugs, or use a few tips and tricks at the same time to find what works best in your garden.

“Do what works best for you. There is no such thing as a perfect garden, and avoiding chemicals is a great way to ensure you aren’t harming the biodiversity of your green space.”
