9 of the best sofa beds for small spaces

Sofa beds come in all shapes and sizes these days, with plenty of clever solutions for smaller spaces. Small sofa beds come with or without arms, with foldable or click clack mechanisms. Some are made as well as a proper bed with deep, sumptuous mattresses, while others are cheap and cheerful, better suited to the occasional sleepover. You can even get small, single-person chair-beds that look great as an accent chair, or a sofa bed in a box like this clever little number from Made.com.

Check out Good Homes magazine’s pick of the best small sofa beds…

1. Teddy sofa bed, Sofa.com

This soft, sumptuous sofa bed with deep seats and feather-back cushions looks too comfy to be a fold-out bed. The Teddy from Sofa.com, handcrafted and delivered to your door in around four-to-six weeks, is available in a range of colours and fabrics, including this chic shade of Rhubarb, with a choice of two styles of wooden leg – mahogany or English oak. This 2.5-seater starts from £1,590, so this one is at the higher end of the price spectrum of the Good Homes’ selection, but the frame comes with a lifetime guarantee. It measures 201cm wide, 115cm deep and unfurls into a sofa bed measuring 236cm by 133cm. You can also get a single loveseat sofa bed from £1,325, two-seat from £1,445 and three-seat sofa bed from £1,730.

2. The Model 04, Swyft

The Model 04 by Swyft, £2,095, is a sofa bed that’s designed well enough to function as your main sofa, as well as a sofa bed of standard double bed proportions. Comfort was a priority when designing the Model 04, eschewing the thin mattresses and metal frames for seven inches of premium foam with additional pocket springs. The arms can be removed if you have a compact space to squeeze it into. Plus, for added convenience, it comes in boxes that can easily fit through tight entranceways and up multiple flights of stairs, and is delivered within 24 hours. Also, the fabrics are stain resistant, durable and guaranteed for two years.

3. Haru sofa bed, Made.com

Made.com’s Haru sofa bed is an absolute classic. The stylish space saver has no bulky arms taking up extra space and looks great as both a sofa and a bed. Available in multiple colours – some with contrast piped detailing for a subtle retro look, as well as more luxurious velvet-effect finishes – it goes from sit to sleep in seconds with a simple click clack mechanism. Pictured below is the two-seater Haru in moss velvet green (£390), but it also comes as a large sofa bed and small single sofa bed. As a sofa it measures 120cm wide by 86 cm deep, while as a bed it measures 182 x 120 x 13cm.

4. Freya sofa bed, Homebase

Freya sofa bed, £250 from Homebase, has become a real hit thanks to its good value price tag and compact size. It’s similar in style and mechanism to Made.com’s Haru sofa bed, but cheaper and smaller, making it ideal for those with a box room looking for a small sofa bed solution. The pared-back design and wooden legs give off Scandi vibes, plus you can partially unfurl it into a chaise for reading or gaming. The click-clack mechanism and fold out legs make transition from sofa to sofa bed super easy. As a sofa it measures 120cm wide by 90cm deep, and as a bed it’s 42 x 120 x 190cm.

9. Lycksele Lövås, Ikea

No sofa-bed roundup is complete without an Ikea sofa bed. While the Good Homes team personally recommends the Friheten grey corner sofa-bed with storage (the author of this piece has one and loves it!), it is quite sizeable. For smaller spaces, try the Lycksele Lövås two-seater folding sofa bed (£279), pictured below in Vansbro bright green. Cheap and cheerful, this one is best for occasional use. Simply remove the cover and slide the easy-to use mechanism forward, et voila, you have a bed in seconds!
