What are the most popular gifting trends for Christmas 2020? The experts at handmade marketplace Etsy have revealed some very telling figures which may inspire your shopping this year.
Long-distance giving
The pandemic has meant that we haven’t always been able to see our loved ones or travel afar to visit friends and family. Etsy has seen a 15% increase in searches for long distance gifts. One extra-special gifting trend taking hold this year is care packages – with searches for them going up by 235%! A long distance gift can be as small as a personalised card or why not opt for a self-care bundle that’ll allow your loved one to truly relax and unwind this Christmas.
Greener gifting

We have all become more aware of the environmental impact that are purchases are having on the world. In response to this a massive trend for 2020 is ‘greener gifting’ – eco friendly options that aren’t plastic or throwaway items. There has been a 53% increase in searches for eco friendly gifts and a 70% increase in searches for eco friendly gift wrap, which is definitely a trend that needs to be cemented year after year.

Decorative games & puzzles
Playing a game of monopoly with the entire family may not be an option this year however what Christmas is complete without a fun game or two? Etsy has found a 50% increase in searches for family games – but of course, these aren’t any games, these are chic games! The classic games we all know and love – like chess, jigsaw puzzles, and noughts and crosses – are stepping it up a notch with modern facelifts, making them the perfect gift.

An illuminating trend that is shown to be popular for Christmas 2020 is for sculptural candles. We are all spending much more time in our homes and the need to make them as cosy as possible is a must! In response to this, Etsy have seen an 86% increase in searches for abstract, modern, and geometric candles. Candles definitely make the perfect gift for any interiors lover.
Cottagecore
Creating a cosy and inviting space is key this Christmas and shoppers are definitely wanting to share the love. Cottagecore is an emerging trend in 2020 which is characterised by its love of traditional, cosy and homely touches. Etsy have seen an 186% increase in searches for outdoor blankets and 197% increase for fire pits. Gift your loved one a cosy outdoor item this year to share the cottagecore vibes.
