Almost half of us felt that during the lockdowns of this year, there wasn’t enough space in our homes. As a result, we’ve ended up with a renewed feeling of admiration for our outdoor spaces, be that balconies, patios or gardens!
Acting as a place to escape to throughout the last year, these spaces have adapted and transformed to our needs. From garden workspaces, to play areas and more, these outdoor areas have become a blissful extension of our homes. That’s why Ikea have selected Outdoor Escapism as one of their biggest trends for SS21. Keep reading for some of our favourite picks from this new range!
Storage solutions

“Limited space shouldn’t become a problem when you’re creating your special space. Mixing up your storage by using different heights will help to maximise what you have available and make a real difference to your space.
“Stacking pots of different sizes to fill with your favourite herbs, flowers and plants automatically creates a zen spot without taking up too much effort on your part.” Commercial Activity & Events Leader at IKEA UK and Ireland, Rosheen Forbes explains. The HYLLIS shelving unit is perfect for this, costing just £10 it will make a real difference to your outside space.
Style it up by attaching the VAJERT rail and hooks beside or above the unit for extra storage. At £10, it will help make sure your gardening tools or watering can are easy to access, whilst being tucked away to save you space within your outdoor area.

Chill out zone

It’s important that your space is a place when you can switch off from the mundane of the day-to-day and really relax. Small and simple updates are key to keep the area sacred and fresh for you to enjoy.
One of the most important elements of your chill out zone is a chair that is ideal for lounging and relaxation. We think the ÄPPLARÖ reclining chair, £45, fits the bill. It adjusts into five different positions to ensure you’re comfortable, and it’s made from sustainably sourced acacia wood.
The wow factor

What really makes a space special is the finishing touches you put into it. From plant choice, to lighting, these are the aspects that take it from an outdoor area to a destination to escape from reality.
Give your balcony or patio flooring a makeover by updating it with the ALTAPPEN floor decking, this will give your floor a total makeover that’s versatile and affordable, yet easy to install.
When it comes to plants, fleshy and succulent plants will help to instil calm and transport you to warmer climates within your space. If you’re not so green-fingered, artificial plants are a great alternative and will still bring plenty of life to your outdoor area. Check out IKEA’s FEJKA range for beautiful options that can make the area as extravagant as you’d like.

As the evening draws in, lighting becomes essential to keep your outdoor haven alive. We love these colourful SOLVINDEN LED lighting chains. They will help to create a mood and are easily hung out, making your space feel warm and open.
Bring the inside, out

Part of the magic of outdoor escapism is bringing your indoor treasures outside to enjoy, and relax with. This KOLBÖRN cabinet, £65, is fit to stay outside and is perfect for storing blankets, lanterns or anything you’d like to keep tidied away. It’s easy to put together, and the neutral colours mean it will blend right in with any colour scheme.
If you don’t have the luxury of your own outdoor space to revamp, that doesn’t mean you can’t get involved with outdoor escapism. Temporarily tweak your living room into a picnic area, with rugs, fairy lights and cushions, or turn your bedroom into a camping den. An outdoor escape means something different to all of us, and is as magical as you want to make it.
