Nanna Normcore: how to get the look
What on earth is Nanna Normcore? This summer an unexpected trend took our interiors back to a timeless era: Coastal Grandma. Think ‘comfortable luxury’, says Ash Read, interiors expert at home and furniture brand Living Cozy of the chic senior-at-the-seaside style. ‘Think homes that are immaculate with breezy linens, natural seagrass and antique furniture.’
Nanna Normcore is her countryside companion. Like her coastal friend, luxurious comfort is key, but there’s less of the blue-and-white stripes, less pampas grass and heaps more florals in curtains, tablecloths and tea sets. Add a smattering of fringing, stacks of quilts and blankets, a splash of rattan and you’re set to go.
1. Art Deco tea set
A tea set is a prerequisite of Nanna Normcore and they run the gamut from fine bone china to chintzy florals. We’re digging this Art Deco inspired beauty from Vista Alegre (which has been creating world-class tableware in Portugal since 1824) on Micucci Interiors. With prices starting at £1,020, it’s not cheap, but the 15 piece Emerald tea set is made from porcelain and hand-painted with matte gold and dark green and will be a showstopper at teatime.

2. Nanna normcore chintz
It’s not Nanna Normcore without a bit (ok, a lot) of chintz. A look that’s best achieved in sumptuous quilts and sink-into cushions. It will feel like summer year round with Daughter’s of Geae’s gorgeous 100% mulberry silk pieces. The reversible quilts (from £320) are designed in London and handmade in India and are dyed onto a silken heavyweight taffeta and filled with organic cotton wadding. Ideal for curling up under with a book.

3. Relaxed rattan
Natural materials are making a massive comeback in biophlic interior design, but then nannas have known they were cool all along. B&Q do an updated take on a rattan easy chair, with this floral piece (from £75). With a soft cushioned seat for comfort, this piece would look good in any living space, or out on a porch for reading in.

4. A fringed lampshade
Love it or hate it, fringing is another key trend in Nanna Normcore and can add a touch of glamour to your interiors (as loved in Pearl Lowe’s book Faded Glamour by the Sea.) The Lotte lampshades from Tinker & Tallulah (from £175) come in the perfect shade of dusky pink velvet and are handsewn in Nottinghamshire using British fabric and trims. Pick from the ceiling pendant or table or floor lamp.

5. A cake stand is peak Nanna Normcore
Cake stands are back in fashion and you have your nanna to thank for it. Show off your bake off recreations with the chic Florence cake stand (£39.99) from Inside Out Living. This stoneware number has a shiny white finish and a pearl edged design, and is perfect for impressing Instagram, or your nanna when she comes round for tea.
