7 of the best Christmas décor trends for 2022
November 22, 2022
Christmas decor trends for 2022 are firmly centred around joy-filled moments. Be that in the form of dopamine decor, which is all about bright, uplifting colours, or reflected in your tables or mantlescape.
Whatever look you go for, sustainability and affordability are two big factors this year, so forget buying new decorations and try your hand at upcycling. Cosiness is also key, so transform your home with Scandi-chic hygge and make it the perfect place to hibernate.
1. Scandi Luxe
Scandinavian style is perennially chic and if you want your Christmas to feel pared-back and beautiful but still cosy, then this is the look for you. Get hygge (the Danish word which means ‘a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or wellbeing’). Scandi Luxe has plenty of natural touches (a jute rug is essential) and a modern twist on tradition, with warm gold accessories and contemporary black decorations. Tapping into the reuse-and-recycle trend of 2022, there’s plenty of brown parcel wrapping paper presents tied with string under the tree.
2. Upcycled DIY décor
Affordable, sustainable, personal and creative, it’s no wonder the trend for upcycling is here to stay and is a big theme for Christmas 2022. Stephanie King, Creative Lead at Dulux, has got some top tips to give your colour scheme a makeover on a budget. If you fancy changing the colour scheme of your Christmas decorations without buying new ones, just give them a refresh and paint them with leftover paint. Follow Stephanie’s TikTok tips on how to give your vases a two-tone transformation.

3. Arctic Shimmer
Texture is key in Christmas dressing this year, as we crave comfort and to feel cosseted. Think chunky knits, super soft velvets and tactile faux sheepskin. Arctic Shimmer has plenty of subtle hints with a sparkly sheen, a smattering of candles and plenty of fairy lights. In keeping with the serene, snowy theme, colours are all crisp whites and greys with silver touches.
4. Winter Berry
It’s not just whites and neutrals making the cut this year, nostalgia is a big one on the 2022 Christmas decor trends list, and this classic red-and-green winter berry colour scheme hits the spot. Turning more to a berry shade the GH style team has brought in rich warming shades of deep plum and dark aubergine for a sumptuous and decadent feel. It looks perfect in rooms with dark wood furniture like mahogany and pairs well with gold touches and winter greens, like eucalyptus and holly.
5. Any sort of ‘scaping’
A scape is defined as ‘denoting a specified type of scene’ – and they’ve been big business in 2022. First up it was doorscapes to offer a big welcome to guests over the festive period. Dress you door with wreaths, candles, mini trees and stars – anything that makes an impression. Interior designer Melanie Lissack is an absolute pro at this one. Check out her Insta post from Christmas 2021 below. Then came tablescaping, where the emphasis is not just on the food on your Christmas dinner table, but the gorgeous decor. And finally, we have mantlescaping. Where better to create cosy seasonal scenes than the mantlepiece?

6. Woodland Jewel
Biophilia – which biologist E.O Wilson described as the ‘innate and genetically determined affinity of human beings with the natural world’ – has been a big trend throughout 2022. Essentially, it’s all about bringing the outdoors in. This Christmas, the trend has had an elegant update to Woodland Jewel taking only the darkest of evergreen hues and foraged finds. It also ticks off more 2022 trends in the form of tortoise shell accessories, sustainable paper decorations and cute mini toadstools.
7. Dopamine décor
Never has the phrase ‘merry and bright’ been more apt. Christmas decor trends get a hefty dose of festive cheer for 2022. Etsy has reported a 346% increase in searches for ‘disco ball decor’, and an 86% increase in searches for ‘vibrant wall art’. Start small, with brightly coloured tablescapes filled with vibrant candles, napkins or baubles like the below look by Rose & Grey. Throw out the idea of a colour-co-ordinated Christmas tree and go for fun-filled mix and match multicoloured decor. If it brings you joy, you’re doing it right.
