Lucy Tiffney’s colourful hand-painted designs have won her a legion of fans since appearing on the BBC’s The Great Interior Design Challenge a few years ago (you can now catch it on Netflix if you haven’t tuned in). While she already produces her own wallpaper, textiles and homewares, she’s now collaborated with high street department store Debenhams on a new collection of ceramic dining and cookware.

From mugs, teapots, bowls, plates and a particularly splendid butter dish to storage tins, cake stands and textiles, the range contains everything you need to inject some colour and personality into your kitchen and dining room.

We caught up with Lucy at the launch of the collaboration to find out more.

What was the inspiration behind the collection?

“The team gave me an open brief, so I just got to go away and start painting. I’d painted some animals – monkeys and birds – that I wanted to use for something, and this was the perfect opportunity. I then sat down with the Debenhams design team to translate the patterns onto the ceramics. With wallpaper, my designs are more up and down, so we worked together to take the individual elements and create these patterns.”

Is your kitchen now fully stocked with the collection?

“Absolutely,  I was so excited when they sent me the box, I couldn’t wait to share it. I’ve been using the jug as a vase for daffodils, and I can’t wait to see how other people put them to use.”

So you’ve previously collaborated on furniture, and now a diningware range – what’s your next dream project?

“I’ve commissioned a few custom rugs in the past, and I think this is something I’d like to look at. It’s a different concept to wallpaper and fabric – maybe a round design would work well? I do love creating my own homewares, but it’s great to collaborate with brands too and put their expertise on creating products to good use!”
