Still unsure which children’s bed to go for? Sleep expert Hannah Shore answers your questions…

We chatted to Silent Night’s sleep expert, Hannah Shore to find out exactly what we need to be considering when we pick out a new bed for our child…

What should we look for in children’s beds?

“Everyone is looking for the cleanest, safest and freshest sleeping environment for their child. At Silent Night all of our mattresses in the Healthy Growth collection are foam free and naturally flame retardant without the use of chemical treatments.

“It’s also important to look for sustainable fibres, and all of these mattresses in our collection are made from recycled plastic bottles. Not only does this help the environment, but also proves an extra-breathable sleep layer for your child.

“We’d also recommend a waterproof protection mattress in case your child has an accident during the night.”

Which beds are best when transitioning a little one from a cot to a bed?

“You need to ensure that it will support your child as they grow, springs within the mattress will allow for that extra support as your child gets bigger. Springs also increase the durability of the mattress.

“Also, choose a bed that you find comfortable yourself, there may be points throughout your child’s development where you need to be in their bed, too, so it’s important everyone is comfortable!”

Which designs are the most popular this year?

“Cabin beds and high sleepers are great for kids bedrooms as they help to create more space. When choosing mattresses for cabin beds and high sleepers make sure they are 15cm deep or less. This will put the top of the mattress 15cm below the safety bar ensuring your child will not roll out of bed during the night.

“Storage is also a key driver for bed designs in kids bedrooms, we can never have enough storage space for all of their toys. Silent Night’s maxi store divan is an innovative and affordable storage solution, designed to maximise the space underneath your child’s bed. There’s enough storage space for 126,000 building blocks, 233 children’s shoe boxes or 269 jigsaws! And it’s all neatly hidden away behind a simple piece of fabric with a press stud fitting which neatly fits to the divan.”
