Why Scandi-style interiors are most inspiring for Brits
New research from Shutterly Fabulous has shown that Brits are most inspired by Scandi-style interiors.
The poll, conducted in honour of upcoming World Interiors Day 2025 (30 May), found that 1-in-5 millennial Brits embrace the Scandi-aesthetic.
It’s not hard to see why; with its clean lines, neutral tones and cosy minimalism, 13% of Brits say that it’s the look they’d most want in their home.
The trend is most popular in Scotland and the South East – with 18% and 17% respectively saying they’d like it the most.
Meanwhile, contemporary interiors continue to hold a strong appeal, with 24% of respondents, particularly older age groups, saying that it’s their preferred style.
Londoners prefer stylish and classic interiors, with 15% drawn to Art Deco glamour, and 12% preferring the timeless charm of Victorian design – reflecting the capital’s rich history and love for bold spaces with plenty of character.
What is Scandi style décor?
Scandinavian style interiors are minimalist and simple.
Think white walls, wooden floors, modern furniture and very little clutter (if any!)
It originates from Nordic influences and is said to bridge the gap between simple, minimalist and functional design choices.
Scandi décor is clean, cosy, bright – in the winter it’s candles and hygge inspired designs, but in summer it’s simply minimalism with natural elements and textures.
Colour wise, Scandi-style décor tends to be light and airy, with greys, ivory, tan and light shades, while the texture tends to focus on the organic and natural – including soft or chunky knits, sheepskin rugs or wool (generally textures that add interest and warmth to a space).
What is Scandi style furniture?
Just like with the décor, Scandi-style furniture is minimalist, modern and generally wooden.
It feels close to nature combining function and beauty, and can be curvy or straight.
It’s smooth and sleek with light-hued wood – often contrasting with a white materials.
Household favourite, IKEA has plenty of great examples of Scandi-style furniture.
Scandinavian furniture is minimalist, with clean lines and light, airy silhouettes. Smooth, sleek, light-hued wood often contrasts with restful white upholstery, creating a beautifully clean and simple look. There are simple lines with little to no ornamentation.
