How Crown is taking its paint ranges to new eco-friendly heights

Crown Paints has made a commitment to the environment with 100% recycled plastic packaging.

Crown Paints launched its earthbalance scheme back in 2008. It committed the company to reducing not only its carbon footprint, but also to address different ways in which it could become an environmentally responsible business.

While the work isn’t finished, it has so far been a resounding success. For example, overall electricity consumption has been reduced by 15% during that period, with a 5% reduction in 2019 alone. Packaging waste has been cut by a similar amount and the Can Back and Nimtech schemes have slashed the amount of waste going to landfill. The Kick Out The Can initiative, meanwhile, has recycled more than 50,000 tins of unwanted paint, languishing in homes across the UK.

Recycle and reuse

Another eco-friendly innovation has been the introduction of paint containers manufactured from 100% recycled post-consumer waste plastic (PCW). With an industry standard of just 25%, this is a significant improvement, cutting tonnes of plastic from landfill.

Working in tandem with packaging experts Emballator, the process includes using yoghurt pots, shampoo bottles, plastic water bottles and more, and separating Polypropylene plastics. This commitment to recovery, reuse and recycling runs through the Crown Paints family.

Balance and beauty

“We’re very proud of the earthbalance scheme and everything it’s helped up to achieve over the last 10 years.” says Mark Lloyd, QHSE Manager at Crown Paints. “We have worked hard to ensure staff from across the whole business are on board and engaged with the scheme and as a result earthbalance is now a central part of our culture at Crown Paints. We’re constantly looking for new ways to improve and the earthbalance scheme will remain a key part of the company ethos as we go forward into the next decade”.

Part of this means not just cutting down waste, but also ensuring products are high quality and long-lasting. The easyclean® paint range, for example, is so hardwearing that you’ll need less paint for touching up scuffs – another feather in the cap of Crown Paints’ sustainability project. The Breatheasy range is certified asthma and allergy friendly, fostering a healthier environment within the home too.
