7 ways to update your living room for free
You don’t need to spend a lot of money redecorating your living room – try out these genius ways of transforming your space for free.

With Google searches for ‘cheap home decorating’ increasing by 83% between February and April 2020, there’s no denying that we’re using this time of lockdown to redecorate our homes. But did you know that great decorating doesn’t have to cost a fortune? In fact, it doesn’t have to cost anything at all!
Try these tips from thinkmoney for ideas to update your living room without spending a penny.
1. Rearrange your furniture

Are you fed up of your living room layout? If you’re considering knocking down a wall to fix it, this could set you back £1,500. Well, theres an easier option – rearranging your current furniture can make the world of difference. Consider using a side table as a central coffee table for example to create a focal point.
2. Hang your curtains higher

3. Repaint a piece of furniture

Buying new furniture often isn’t cheap, but you can completely transform the look of a piece of furniture by painting it. This Annie Sloan project uses some of Annie’s purchasable stencils, but you could create your own, or paint freehand to create fun and interesting patterns.
4. Create a personal gallery wall

Create a gallery wall by collating all of your favourite prints and photos that you have around the house and arrange them in a way that is appealing to you. Or, if you already have a gallery wall, consider switching the frames around or even the pictures to add a new lease of life to your living space.
5. Fill your empty fireplace

Utilise the features you already have in your home. You can fill your empty fireplace with lots of different things to add interest. We love the idea of tiling it using mirrored tiles to bounce light around the room. Or, fill the empty space with books and use as a mini library.
6. Mix and match accessories

Decorative bits and bobs can become unexciting when you’re looking at them everyday. Get crafty and make your own accessories for your living space, or we all have those items that we’ve picked up over time but haven’t worked out the perfect place to house them. Now’s the time to find the ideal spot!
7. Use offcuts for an interesting feature

Be inspired by the offcuts of wallpaper and fabric that you’ve been collecting over the years and create something beautiful. You could make a collage and frame it for a statement print, or use offcuts of wallpaper to cover shelves or the inside of kitchen cupboards.
