When designing a living space, one of the items that are at the top of everyone’s wish list is space. Whether you use it for your morning yoga or evening entertaining (or maybe both) we can all agree that a spacious living area is a lusted-after luxury. Unfortunately for many of us no amount of clever storage or rearranging of furniture will make a difference.

One way you can create that wonderful feeling of extra space is to connect indoor and outdoor living areas, creating the illusion of a single zone. The key to this is to create flow between the spaces which you can do with wider openings and continuous flooring materials. Bifold or sliding doors remove the barrier and step between the two spaces, enhancing the overall look.

When it comes to choosing your flooring, you need to carefully consider which material you use. Many traditional paving materials are not suitable for internal use, and vice versa. Natural finishes such as wood or stone will require regular sealing and will fade or change colour when used externally, meaning that you will eventually lose the matching indoor-outdoor look.

Porcelain has been gradually gaining popularity as a paving choice over the last five years. During manufacture the tiles are vitrified; a process that removes nearly all of the moisture and makes them strong, frost proof, colourfast, fade proof and resistant to staining. This means that unlike other materials, porcelain will not be affected by freezing temperatures or exposure to UV.

Because porcelain is resistant to moss & mould growth, staining, scratching and fading, your outdoor space will look the same in ten or twenty years as it does when first installed.
