The experts at Origin explain the ins and outs of how to choose doors for your home.

Whether you’re planning a home renovation or simply need to replace worn out doors, choosing a style that will suit your interior space can be diffcult. From traditional patio doors to sliding doors, the array of different door types available can be overwhelming.

We’re teaming up with British manufacturer of aluminium doors and windows, Origin for this year’s Good Homes roomsets at the Ideal Home Show, where they will be featuring their stylish exterior doors. We caught up with the experts to find out what the most stylish and practical door options are and the pros and cons of each.

Bi-fold doors

Bi-fold doors are often associated with contemporary properties, but they’re used increasingly in traditional homes. The Origin Bi-fold is completely bespoke, ranging from one to ten door sets in a configuration to match your requirements.

The versatility of the Bi-fold door allows them to complement new-builds, extensions or older period-style properties. With a choice of over 150 RAL shades, dual colour options and woodgrain finishes, you can be sure to find a colour to suit your style.

The Origin Bi-fold Door offers a choice of non-weathered or weathered thresholds. A non-weathered option provides a level floor finish, with a seamless transition. Non-weathered options are recommended for internal usage. The weathered option leaves a minimal step and ensures that your home is left watertight and weather protected.”

Sliding doors

“Offering the perfect blend of functionality and aesthetics, the Origin Sliding Door provides a widescreen view of your world with impressively large glass panels and ultra-slim sightlines.

Sliding doors are made up of two or more large glass panels, doors can slide all the way to right or left or can be staged intermittently being configured exactly to your requirements.

Sliding doors tend to be made up of two or more large panes of glass, one of which slides behind the other. Similar to Bi-fold doors, they can replace an entire wall in your home, offering widescreen views. The Origin Sliding Door has two configuration options, either one door slides over the other, or both doors slide out from the centre. The maximum panel size is up to 3m tall by 2.2m wide enabling you to take full advantage of the natural light and maximise space. The running mechanism for the Sliding Door is specifically designed for effortless operation and as with all Origin doors, no matter the size, they are not heavy or difficult to open.

French doors

“The Origin French Door offers a modern take on a traditional style. Traditional door frames leave little flexibility meaning that the whole wall can’t be replaced. The French door allows you to make the most of your existing space by flooding your home with natural light. Views are not as wide as sliding or bi-folding doors, but they still offer a much better view than a single door or windows.

Standard configuration of the Origin French Door involves two doors hung to open outwards or inwards. The Origin French Door is only available on traditional door frames, which create a small lip between inside and outside that must be stepped over. The normal door frame will separate the outside from inside. Although only available on traditional door frames, to help you maximise on space, the doors are hinged to open a full 180 degrees.

The Origin French Door is the most affordable option over bi-fold or sliding doors as they are much smaller. While they may be best suited to older-style properties, French doors offer greater variation in styles of frame and glass. They can be adapted to work with traditional features such as sash windows and plate glass windows.
