Kitchen makeover: a traditional space for a family home
The Millard family in Bristol dreamed of having a traditional kitchen that catered for their modern family needs. Their wish-list included a specific set of must-haves – great storage, a place to sit and classic features.
But they were hampered by the shape and layout of their existing kitchen. It just wasn’t working for entertaining friends and spending quality family time together. By removing three walls they were able to create one large room, providing a blank canvas for the new kitchen.

Traditional Shaker-style kitchen
On a trip to 102 Kitchens by Nailsea Electrical in Bristol, the Millards fell in love with the Ashbourne range by Masterclass Kitchens. Its Shaker doors and classic painted wood finish are a must for a traditional kitchen. Once they’d settled on this style and decided on the layout, they could pick out the arrangement of cupboards and drawers that would best suit the space.

Classic colour scheme
Choosing two shades for kitchen units let the Millards add a personal touch to their new Shaker kitchen. From a palette of country colours available for the Ashbourne range, they fell in love with cool Scots Grey for the cabinetry and bold Oxford Blue to highlight the kitchen island. This provided the family with a traditional-yet-timeless look. The richness of the island stands out against the light, neutral cabinets.

Mantel shelf
The Millards knew that a range cooker would be the perfect way to cement their ideas for a traditional kitchen. Instead of setting the cooker into a chimney breast, they did the next best thing. They placed it in front of a rustic brick wall and topped it with a beautiful classic mantel from Masterclass Kitchens. Not only does it add an eye-catching focal point, it also hides away the modern extractor fan that would otherwise spoil the country effect, and offers the perfect spot to rest a clock.

Butler sink & brassware
Top priority for any traditional kitchen is a butler sink, and the Millards had space for a useful double version. Fitted with a brushed brass mixer tap, it sets the scene perfectly, tying in with the Monmouth brass cup handles and knobs on the cabinet doors and drawers. But the Millards didn’t stop there – they added industrial-chic pendant lights with gleaming fittings in black and brass to elevate the theme further.

Traditional kitchen dresser
No traditional kitchen is complete without the quintessential dresser. It has that country kitchen vibe and also provides a great opportunity for storage. To create the effect without interrupting the base units, the Millards added a dresser top to the run. Fitted with glass doors, it’s ideal for displaying favourite crockery and glassware. This classic dresser completes the Millard kitchen with a flourish.
