George Clarke creates bespoke accessible kitchen as part of Channel 4 series

The kitchen was created for homeowner Ben White and his family as part of Channel 4’s George Clarke’s Beautiful Builds. Demonstrating how thoughtful kitchen design can empower independence and bring families together.

Why was the accessible kitchen created?

Freedom by Symphony, a collection of kitchens created with accessibility and inclusivity in mind was showcased on George Clarke’s Beautiful Builds.

Ben, a wheelchair user following a skydiving accident over a decade ago, was hoping for a space that would be able to balance style with accessibility. His existing kitchen was narrow and limiting, preventing him from cooking or fully engaging with family life.

Who designed the kitchen?

Working with Freedom by Symphony, accessible design consultant Adam Thomas, Moorgate kitchens designer Mark Doble and George Clarke’s production team, the home was transformed. It became an open-plan environment designed around freedom of movement, functionality and togetherness.

What does the accessible kitchen look like?

The new kitchen integrates seamlessly with the dining and living areas, creating a central hub for eating, working and socialising.

Every detail is designed to be both practical and elegant, including a rise-and-fall Corian worktop with prep sink, dual-sink configuration. It also has NEFF smart appliances openable by voice command or app to make everything easier to use.

The finished kitchen is tailored specifically to Ben’s bespoke needs. The striking colour palette combines Symphony’s Melrose range in Merlot Red with the ribbed effect Costina Fresca cabinets. These have been enhanced by bold brass handles for a contemporary yet timeless look.

Premium Corian Calacatta Greige worktops were supplied by CDUK and fabricated by Counter Production, include a waterfall-edge rise and fall section and matching windowsills.

Central to the design is a right-angled rise-and-fall worktop with integrated prep sink, providing essential height adjustability for inclusive use. State of the art appliances from NEFF have also been provided and include the Slide & Hide oven with its retractable door and the push to open DoorAssist fridge. All of these are operable via the HomeConnect app or voice command.

A ZIP water hydrotap celius provides all in one boiling, chilled, sparkling and filtered water instantly. While a dual sunk configuration: shallow prep sink alongside a deeper fixed-height sink, ensures the space works seamlessly for all members of the household.

What did Ben make of the finished result?

Ben tells us of the transformation: ““There’s now enough space in the kitchen for us to be cooking together as a family.

“We can lower the rise and fall worktop down and me and my daughter can bake. My partner, she can raise the unit up and we can have multiple people working and cooking food together whilst we’re preparing and cooking food in the kitchen space. The kids can be sitting at the breakfast bar and we can all be social as a family.”
