Essential care for wooden worksurfaces

Wooden worksurfaces are a natural and timeless classic for any kitchen. With their elegant style, character and durability, their organic beauty and versatility make them an enduring and popular option for homeowners looking to create a warm and welcoming kitchen space.

To ensure your stunning surfaces stand the test of time, proper protection and maintenance is key. Woodcare experts Barrettine have all the advice you need to maintain your wooden worksurfaces for many years to come.

Wooden worksurfaces are a key investment in your home and, like any investment, they require proper care and attention to maintain their value and appearance.

“Wood is a versatile material that adapts to many different interior design aesthetics,” says Steve Bailey, Group Managing Director for Barrettine, “and the character and charm of wood has persisted for centuries. Wooden worksurfaces are a key investment in your home and, like any investment, they require proper care and attention to maintain their value and appearance.”

Protect wooden worksurfaces with Armourflex® Hardwax Oil

Wooden worksurfaces face a daily multitude of challenges. From hot pans and sharp knives to spills, stains and constant wiping, these surfaces endure significant wear and tear. While timber is naturally durable, without proper protection it can become scratched, stained and even harbour harmful bacteria.

“Unprotected wood is porous,” adds Steve Bailey, “which means it can absorb liquids and potentially harmful substances. This not only affects its appearance but it can also pose health risks, especially in food preparation areas.”

To combat these challenges, Barrettine has developed its Armourflex® Hardwax Oil, a high-performance coating designed specifically for interior timber surfaces including worksurfaces, flooring and bannisters.

Wooden worksurfaces are a key investment in your home and, like any investment, they require proper care and attention to maintain their value and appearance.

Armourflex® Hardwax Oil embodies the company’s ethos of being ‘inspired by nature, designed for living’, as Steve Bailey explains, “We’ve harnessed the protective power of natural oils and waxes. Soya and linseed oils penetrate deep into the wood grain while carnauba wax forms a resilient outer layer. The result is a finish that doesn’t just sit on top of the wood but it becomes an integral part of it.”

Armourflex® Hardwax Oil works by creating a microporous barrier, which allows the wood to breathe while at the same time repelling liquids and resisting scratches. Most importantly, it also creates a natural and elegant finish that enhances the grain rather than masking it.

Making your wooden worksurfaces safe

This multifunctional oil is also designed with safety in mind. “We understand that kitchens are not just for cooking,” says Steve Bailey. “They are often the hub of family life. That’s why we’ve ensured that our Armourflex® Hardwax Oil is certified Food & Toy Safe when dry to EN 1186:2002 & EN71:3 standards.”

This means that once the oil has dried, the treated surface is safe for food contact and children’s toys. It’s an essential feature for kitchen worksurfaces, where food prep and family activities often overlap.

Application and maintenance – simple steps for lasting protection

Applying Armourflex® Hardwax Oil is an easy and straightforward process but attention to detail is key for best results.

Wooden worksurfaces are a key investment in your home and, like any investment, they require proper care and attention to maintain their value and appearance.

Before applying any finish to freshly-laid wood, leave the timber to acclimatise in the room for several days, ensuring its moisture content is below 15%.

If you’re renovating existing wood that has had previous coatings applied, remove these first by sanding then fill any cracks or gaps with a suitable wood filler. Next, smooth the surface with 120-150 grit sandpaper. Remove any sanding dust thoroughly then apply methylated spirit to prepare the surface for the next step.

Always do a test patch in an inconspicuous area before the full application and if you are happy with the result, apply the oil, working with the grain, using a quality brush or roller.

Start with one coat, allowing it to dry fully before seeing if a second coat is needed and wipe off any excess oil with a lint-free cloth.

Regular maintenance will keep wooden worksurfaces looking good for longer

For ongoing care, you can touch up any marks and scratches without sanding while larger renovations can be lightly sanded with 120-150 grit sandpaper, removing the dust then applying a single, thin coat of oil to refresh the surface and restore protection.

Regular maintenance of your wooden worksurfaces not only preserves their beauty but it also extends their lifespan. With proper care and attention, your surfaces will remain a stunning feature of your kitchen for decades to come.
