Queen of Clean Lynsey Crombie answers your summer cleaning questions

We chatted to This Morning’s cleaning expert, Lynsey Crombie about how her love of cleaning started, her must-have cleaning products – and how to get rid of any annoying summertime stains.

Read on to discover her unique solutions for getting rid of fake tan stains, how to freshen up your garden furniture, and even how to keep flies out of your home…

Where did your love of cleaning come from?

“Cleaning has always been my therapy. Whenever I’m feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or emotional, I reach for the mop.

There’s just something so satisfying about transforming a messy space into a calm, sparkling haven. It instantly lifts my mood and gives me back a sense of control.

“But truthfully, cleaning is in my blood.

“Both my nan and my mum were incredibly house-proud and cleaners and passed down their passion (and their tricks of the trade!).

“I also ran a successful cleaning business helping elderly clients – they taught me so much and gave me a real appreciation for the power of a clean, well-kept home.

“Honestly, I think I was meant to be the ‘Queen of Clean’ and I love sharing that knowledge with others!”

What are your must-have cleaning products?

  1. Antibacterial Washing-Up Liquid
It’s not just for dishes! It’s brilliant for wiping down surfaces, freshening up cupboard doors, and even tackling stubborn stains on clothes. I always recommend using an antibacterial formula for a deeper clean.
  2. White Vinegar
An absolute classic for lots of reasons. It tackles limescale, soap scum, and window smears and no, your house won’t smell like a chip shop! The scent disappears quickly, and you can now buy lovely fragranced vinegars, like lemon or lavender infused.
  3. Multi-Purpose Cleaner
A good multi-surface spray is essential for everyday spills and wipe-downs. I opt for eco-friendly brands where I can
  4. Fabric refresher spray
I’m a big fan of the M&S fabric refresher spray. It’s gentle, smells great, and safe to use around pets.

How can we get rid of fake tan stains on our bedding and towels?

“White vinegar is a lifesaver for this. Just spray the stained area generously with white vinegar, let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe clean.

“It breaks down the pigments without harsh scrubbing.

“A cream cleaner (like Cif) is great for hard surfaces like toilet seats or bathroom tiles, it gently lifts off the residue with a non-scratch sponge.

How can I get sauce stains out of my clothes?

“Scrape off as much as possible with a blunt knife.

“Turn the item inside out and rinse under cold water to push the stain out.

“Then apply a small blob of washing-up liquid and wash as normal.

“It’s all about working quickly before the stain sets.”

How can I keep bugs and flies out of the house?

“Use peppermint essential oil – dab a few drops around windowsills and door frames. Bugs hate the smell and will keep well away!

“Another option is to grow mint plants near doors and windows.

“Be sure to keep bins clean inside and out and always tie off food waste securely.”

How can I freshen up the bedroom during the warmer weather?

“A stuffy bedroom can quickly feel stale. Keep windows cracked open whenever possible, even just ajar.

“Air your bed daily before making it (let those sheets breathe!).

“Try to keep clutter to a minimum to reduce dust, vacuum weekly, and dust regularly especially bedside tables and skirting boards.

What can I do to ensure garden furniture is clean and ready for use?

“Warm soapy water works brilliantly on most garden furniture.

“I use my old mop and bucket to give outdoor chairs and tables a good scrub. Then just let them air dry naturally in the sun.”
