‘Every 15 seconds, someone searches for handmade or vintage furniture on Etsy,’ says a spokesperson for the global online marketplace. Etsy connects you directly to designer-makers and sellers, making it a great place to find one-of-a-kind pieces for your home. Not only is the website no longer a closely guarded secret among interiors fans, it’s a trendsetter. Read on for Etsy’s top decor trends for 2023…

1. Dark wood

It’s official – after months, maybe even years, of minimalist Scandinavian light woods being the trends, dark wood is back. ‘There has been a 337% increase in searches for walnut desks and accessories and a 28% increase in searches for brown seating or furniture,’ says an Etsy spokesperson, ‘while there’s been a 24% decrease in searches for Scandinavian decor.’

Think traditional woods like mahogany, teak and walnut. This Ferm Living Feve Desk from Nest (prices from £1,245) in walnut will make a chic update to any room.

2. Parisian interiors 

Another nod to the notion that minimalism is over, is the fact that searches for Parisian interiors are on the increase. Think good quality, solid items like gilded mirrors, marble accents, and oil paintings in ornate frames. Etsy noted ‘a 119% increase in searches for wall mirrors, a 96% increase in searches for marble sinks, a 67% increase in searches for custom oil paintings and a 44% increase in searches for ruffled duvet covers in the last three months’.

Look to The French Bedroom Company for the chicest of beds, like this taupe velvet buttoned bed (prices from £1,395). Part of the Love Story collection, it’s made from solid oak and is hand-carved.

3. Mermaidcore

Mermaidcore is hot right now. Starting in the fashion and beauty world, this whimsical trend has moved into the interiors space, and has a dream-like feel. Over the last three months Etsy has seen a 125% increase in searches for scalloped runners, a 30% increase in searches for oyster shell ring dishes, and a 24% increase in searches for mother of pearl trays.

4. Paper lighting

Pooky does a fine line in lighting across the board, and it’s got a great collection of paper lighting. According to Etsy, its one of the top trends for 2023, with an 85% increase in searches on Etsy for hanging paper lanterns, a 61% increase in searches for rice paper lighting, and a 24% increase in searches for paper floor lamps.

‘These playful yet sophisticated pieces can create a magical ambiance whether used as a statement piece or clustered together to create a larger display,’ said a spokesperson for the brand.

5. Rugs with personality

Move over rattan – seagrass and jute, rugs with personality are where it’s at. Etsy has seen a whopping 401% increase in searches for handwoven rugs, a 62% increase in searches for custom rugs, a 55% increase in searches for colourful rugs and a 49% increase in searches for wavy rugs.

‘From 70s-inspired shags to geometric Moroccan designs, to intricate vintage Turkish rugs with a charmingly-worn appearance, rugs with personality are a great way to have fun with colour, pattern and print without overwhelming a space,’ says an Etsy spokesperson.
