5 of the best garden heaters

October 15, 2022

Entertain al fresco all year round with Good Homes magazine’s pick of the best garden and patio heaters for the home.

First up, what kind of patio heater should you go for, gas or electric? We’ve all huddled around a large gas heater in a pub garden, and while they do give off a good kick of heat, gas is expensive right now, and most of the heat disappears right into the night air. So electric might be your best bet.

Then you need to choose between infrared and halogen heaters. What’s the difference? Halogen, used in the most intense bulbs emitting shortwave infrared, will warm you even in a breeze, whereas mediumwave and longwave infrared bulbs are only effective in sheltered spaces.

Finally, as we all know, electricity and water are not a good mix, so check the IP rating. Required by law, the IP rating tells you how safe the patio heater is. If the last digit in the IP number is a 4, eg IP64, then it’s a showerproof patio heater. If it’s 5, eg IP65, it’s a waterproof patio heater.
