7 of the best sparkling wines under £20

We serve up 7 of the best supermarket budget Champagne, Prosecco and more, but which will be top of the froths?

What’s the difference between Champagne, Crémant, Prosécco, Pignoletto, Cava and sparkling wine?

Ultimately, whilst all of these names describe a sparkling wine worthy of seasonal sipping, their reputation, taste and price can be dependent on the location where they are produced and the fizz’s fermentation process.

So whilst Champagne must be made in its namesakes province, Crémant acts its a fabulously French alternative at the fraction of the price. So whatever your bottle budget, we list the worthy contenders of this fizz war:

Tesco Finest Pignoletto, 750ml, £7.50

With juicy red apple and pear flavours and just a hint of spice, Prosecco’s lesser known Italian cousin Pignoletto (made with Grechetto grapes instead of Glera), is perfect party pop for festive celebrations with food and wine expert, Olly Smith calling it: ”brighter than your average bubbly”. Start your soiree with this aperif served alongside smoked salmon or an antipasti platter. Take a trip to Tesco, or buy online here.

Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Crémant De Loire, 750ml, £11.50

Crémant de Loire is a wonderful alternative to Champagne and is made in the same way using the ‘méthode traditionelle’. With a super saving made on the shelves, why not splash the cash and serve alongside a shellfish platter?

Vilarnau NV Cava Brut, 750ml, £12.00

Not keen on the dryness of Champagne? Cava is Spain’s sweet (badly-kept) secret, but is too often cursed with ‘cheap’ connotations.

Established in 1949, Vilarnau is a top end, finely-crafted Cava produced on a small and very exclusive scale with a touch of the avant-garde about it. This Cava has many links to the city of Barcelona with strong links to the modern, cutting edge spirit of the one of Spain’s most famous areas. Vilarnau Brut is the producer’s flagship release that has been aged for more than 12 months. We love these Gaudi-inspired skins too which make a stylish statement whilst serving to your guests – buy online at Ocado.
