At a time of year when you’re welcoming a lot of visitors into your home, time to turn your attention to making sure your spare room is the perfect set up for guests.

To find inspiration for the very best bedrooms a host can offer, we’re taking inspiration from some beautiful, design-forward hotels from around the world.

These are the best tricks and tips from these hotels that can be adopted into your own guest bedroom.

Add home comforts

When you have guests staying for an extended period, it can be difficult if they feel as though they don’t have their own space to relax. Including a reading chair in a room offers them a little retreat for some alone time without having to get into bed, while a desk table is a great multi-functional piece of furniture for a spare room if they need to get away to complete a task.

Offer hanging storage

Opt for hanging storage over drawers and shelves in a guest bedroom. Chances are, guests won’t be staying long enough to properly unpack from a suitcase into a chest of drawers, but may want to hang up clothes to air them before they wear them.

An idea like this peg rail is great for small spaces, keeping the floor free while offering flexible room for clothes and even their dressing gown. You can also see how we used peg rail to decorate in our Good Homes Christmas Natural Living room set

Streamline styling

While it may be tempting to fill your guest bedroom to make it homely, it’s all about striking a balance with accessorising. Too much and you’ll have a room that’s cluttered, leaving no room for your guests’ belongings – plus, it’ll make it harder to dust and keep clean!

Keep it simple with some choice accessories, and leave plenty of tabletop space for guests to use. Using wall-mounted lighting is a great way to free up space on a bedside table, for example.

Layer bed linen

While it’ll be impossible to get a sleeping set-up that will please every potential guest into your home, layering bedding means that guests have more control over how warm they are during the night. Layer a sheet and duvet, and consider placing a basket filled with extra blankets just in case – just like in a hotel!

Go bold with design

A bedroom with the ‘wow-factor’ will help guests to feel valued in your home, rather than they’ve just been dumped in an uninspiring spare room. You can afford to go a little more overboard in a guest room, as you won’t have to look at it day after day, so why not go for a bold colour or feature wallpaper in this space?
