Best mattresses: 6 buys for a better night’s sleep 2025
New research from Direct Line has outlined what a sleep deprived nation in the UK is.
A shocking 14% of Brits (7.5 million people) are surviving on dangerously low levels of sleep each night, getting less than five hours. A whopping 71% of UK adults aren’t getting the recommended 7-9 hours sleep each night either, which is crucial to having a productive day.
It’s not just productivity you need to worry about though. Poor sleep is closely linked with serious health conditions including cardiac issues, dementia and diabetes.
A new mattress could go a long way to helping you to get the right amount of good rest.
What to look for in a mattress?
We spend roughly a third of our lives in bed, so it’s worth spending to get a top quality mattress. But what features do we need to look for?
Comfort
Comfort might seem obvious, but what is comfortable for some can be not so for others. Some of us prefer a softer mattress while others would rather a firmer model.
Some of us tend to sleep hot and enjoy the airflow that a coil support system can provide, but others prefer sleeping in their bed and would rather an all foam model. It all depends on who will be using it.
Support
This refers to how well a mattress will handle your body weight. A stronger support will limit sinking or sagging while providing an even surface for your body, whereas a less supportive mattress will typically dip in areas where most of your weight is concentrated.
The base layers of a mattress is responsible for how supportive it is, so these components are known as the support core.
The right mattress for you
Your sleep position, body type and personal preference are also major factors in finding the perfect mattress.
If you’re a side sleeper, you’ll likely need cushioning around your shoulders and hips. Whereas back and stomach sleepers, will need extra support around their midsection, and will also likely need a firmer mattress.
Your body type is also a big factor. The more you weigh, the deeper your body will sink into your mattress . If you weigh less than 130 pounds, you might prefer a softer mattress that will cushion your body, but if you weigh considerably more a firmer mattress will stop you sinking.
These aren’t always accurate though, it does come down ultimately to personal preference.
