Where’s the first place you look for inspiration for your bathroom? You might buy your favourite interiors magazine (GoodHomes, of course) or head to Pinterest, or you might be someone who picks up their interiors inspo by scrolling through their Instagram feed.

If this sounds like you, there’s a good chance your eventual bathroom design has picked up a few identifiable traits. New research from Harvey Water Softeners has trawled over 3.3 million images on Instagram to find the top trends in bathroom design on the popular social media platform and even how many likes a bathroom featuring each trend is likely to get.

Dual sinks

Two sinks in a bathroom really is a game changer, especially if you share a space with your significant other. Their other benefit? They look good on the Gram. Sometimes called ‘his and her basins’, a double sink could land you as many as 3,107 likes on your photo.

Devil’s Ivy plant

Plants in the bathroom are a big trend, but none so much as the Devil’s Ivy plant. This plant is trailing, making it perfect for on-trend hanging plant pots and baskets. This one scores on average 2,209 likes.

Geometric tiles

Geometric tiles make for a statement feature in a bathroom, which in turn makes it a perfect room to share on Instagram. Patterned tiles could bag you the most likes on Instagram of any of these trends – with an average of 4,668!

Circular mirrors

Un-stylish bathroom mirrors are a thing of the past, and circular styles are the biggest trend on social media at the moment. 2,565 people on average may like a circular mirror image, but give yourself an extra half-point if the mirror frame is gold – another huge social media trend!

Gold/black taps

Black taps ranked highly in our guide to the top trending bathroom taps of the year, so it’s no surprise they rate highly on our Instagram trend countdown, with 2,361 likes per post. Gold taps just pip them to the post in this list however, scoring 2,951 likes on average.

Recessed shelves

For the perfect Instagram picture, you need to make sure you have a tidy nook for your toiletries. Recessed shelving in a shower is the Instagrammer’s go-to, and in-shower recessed shelves can get an average of 2,336 likes.

Rainfall showers

Overhead rainfall showers are the most popular choice for Instagram-worthy bathrooms by far. Black shower screens and black towel rails also squeaked into the overal top 20 bathroom trends!
