How to design a bathroom that won’t date by 2030
When it comes to style, your bathroom can be the one room in your home that dates the fastest – mainly thanks to expensive-to-change elements such as tiles, built-in storage and bathtubs.
And that’s especially true if you’re a lover of things that are in fashion right now.
We only need to look back at the bold colours, busy patterns and copper sinks of 2010’s bathroom trends to see how far we’ve come.
So, if you’re thinking about decorating your bathroom in 2026, there are plenty of ways to style it so it doesn’t feel dated by 2030.
After 12 years as the co-founder of Showerscape.co.uk – award-winning bespoke photographic shower panels – I’ve seen plenty of bathroom styles come and go.
But I do believe that timeless design can be achieved more easily than you might think.
And you don’t need to be an interior designer to make it work – you just need to focus on what is right for you, how you live and what will make a practical space.
Renovating a bathroom is a lot of work and takes time, so you don’t want to choose permanent elements that will date quickly.

While it’s easy enough to change the paint colour on the walls, mirrors and other loose fixtures and fittings, the best thing you can do is to focus on timeless elements for your permanent features.
Ensure you choose things you really love, that you will enjoy using, so you don’t get bored of the space.
They may be your favourite colour, or lovely natural stone or wooden worktops or flooring.
For a touch of personality that can evolve over time, incorporate artwork and plants into the decor.
If you want to make a design statement, our large-scale printed shower panels allow you to create a feature wall in your bathroom that delivers impact without locking you into a trend; they offer flexibility without compromising long-term style.
By making thoughtful choices now, you can create a bathroom that still feels fresh, elegant and relevant well into the next decade.
Here are my top five tips…
Embrace a spa-like and biophilic design
The shift towards natural, calming, spa-inspired bathrooms isn’t going anywhere soon, so if you’re looking to redecorate your bathroom in 2026, this is a timeless style to opt for.
With lives and work busier than ever, we’re all looking for a space that can become a sanctuary where we can switch off – or that offers an element of escapism.
And that’s not going to change anytime soon.
Go for earthy colour palettes, natural materials (wood, stone, concrete) and biophilic touches (wood, stone, plants).
Opt for a bathroom clad in warm taupe, cashmere grey, sage green or soft mushroom hue, or a shelf or vanity cabinet in wood or stone.
If budget isn’t a concern, you could incorporate a freestanding tub to act as a gorgeous central focal point.
And when it comes to your walls, think beyond standard tiles or paint colours, and instead find ways to – almost quite literally – bring the outdoors in.
You could step into nature with a stunning Showerscape forest scene or take a shower next to a beautiful summer meadow for timeless views.
Smart storage solutions
Storage can go a long way in ensuring your bathroom doesn’t feel cluttered – but bulky cabinets can make your space feel dated.
Built-in storage, such as recessed shelves in the shower, mirrored cabinets that are flush with the wall, or drawers with clever dividers, is a great timeless way to keep your room tidy, without eating into your space. And they look smart and streamlined too.
Choose fittings that feel elegant
It’s easy to get swayed into opting for new styles that are in the shops, but often these are the elements that date the fastest.
When choosing taps, showerheads and hardware, my advice is to stick to simple, streamlined shapes that don’t lean too heavily into a trend.
Matte black and brushed brass have been everywhere in recent years, but softer finishes like brushed nickel, chrome and stainless steel tend to stay relevant for much longer.
They’re easy to pair with any future colour scheme, and you won’t feel boxed in if your style evolves.
You can still add personality through shapes such as curved spouts, slim handles or minimal levers, which all feel modern without being tied to a fad.
Long-lasting lighting
Depending on the lighting you choose, it can date really quickly if it’s too stylised.
I’d advise going with a layered approach to create different moods, rather than really bright overhead lights.
This can be achieved with soft wall lighting and warm LED mirror lights to give a warm, flattering glow.
And if you’re renovating, consider installing dimmers as they instantly make the room feel more luxurious.
Timeless textures
Trends can be tempting, but as they often centre around a bold colour or a pattern, they can age quickly.
One way to combat this is through bringing in textures into your bathroom – these styles really do stand the test of time.
Combining matte surfaces with polished ones, or pairing smooth wall finishes with subtly patterned flooring, is a great way to add depth to your design.
Our new Showerscape panels range reflects this – with a timber stack design, cast concrete and edgy slate rockface.
Timeless bathroom checklist:
- Choose neutral, earthy wall and tile tones rather than stark whites or bold pastels.
- Invest in durable, high-quality materials such as natural or engineered stone, wood-veneered vanities, quality metal fittings that age gracefully.
- Opt for classic tile patterns – subway, hexagon, herringbone – or large-format stone tiles rather than small busy mosaics.
- Prioritise layout and storage to reduce clutter and ensure the space remains functional and fresh.
- Introduce personality such as art, plants, accessories and textiles. Consider statement shower panels with natural imagery (like ours at Showerscape) – they give a touch of drama or calm without locking you into a dated style.
- If installing technology, focus on subtlety such as hidden taps, built-in lighting controls, underfloor heating, discreet ventilation – but avoid gaudy touchscreens or bulky sensors.
