How to keep your bathroom looking fresh over the festive period
The busiest room in the house at Christmas time? It’s not the kitchen, it’s the toilet!
With family and friends popping by throughout December for mince pies, cocktails and catch-ups, bathrooms quickly become the unsung hero of the season.
A little thoughtful prep can keep things smelling fresh, stocked up and suitably festive – without you transforming into a Christmas housekeeper!
Here’s Queen of Clean Lynsey Crombie’s top tips on bathroom cleaning for Christmas and how how to ensure it’s guest-ready for Christmas in less than an hour…

Add essential oil inside the toilet roll
The simplest festive trick ever – but it makes a huge difference.
Add 1-2 drops of peppermint, pine, cinnamon, eucalyptus or orange essential oil to the inside cardboard tube of your toilet roll.
Every pull releases a subtle seasonal scent – like magic!
Keep toilet cleaning tablets handy
A small jar of dental or toilet-cleaning tablets placed discreetly nearby means you can drop one in between flushes. It’s a way of achieving full freshness without effort!
Stock up (and over stock!)
Make essentials impossible to miss – think extra toilet rolls (displayed in a basket or on a shelf), a full hand soap, clean hand towels or festive disposable guest towels, and a pump of hand sanitiser.
You could even add a ribbon to your spare basket of toilet rolls for extra festive décor points.
DIY Quick-Use Freshener Spray
Create a small ‘just one spritz’ bottle to leave beside the toilet.
Simply mix half a cup of water, a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda, 6-10 drops of peppermint or pine oil, and shake well.
Hide a secret basket of supplies
For your eyes only, keep emergency items tucked under the sink, these could include:
- Surface wipes or antibacterial spray
- Spare soap
- Disposable gloves
- Microfibre cloth
This is speedy cleaning made simple in case you need to dash in between guests.

Switch to festive soap and towels
A Christmas-scented handwash and a patterned seasonal hand towel will instantly add that festive touch to the space, showing guests you’ve though to bring Christmas to every aspect of your home.
Add a diffuser or wax warmer
Choose soft winter fragrances like vanilla, fir, orange peel or cinnamon.
Subtlety is key, you don’t want overpowering aromas competing with the Christmas feast.
Keep the bin empty and lined
Refresh the liner often and place a cotton pad or tissue inside with a drop of essential oil at the bottom. This will ensure it still smells nice and avoids any unpleasantries,
Refill in mini sizes
Mini baskets with mini lotions, spare toothbrushes and feminine hygiene products are ideal for putting into guest bathrooms for overnight guests.
These are small touches that give them the VIP treatment.
Make it festive
There’s no reason you can’t bring Christmas decorations into the bathroom, too.
Transform the space into a mini winter wonderland, including a mini wreath or garland around the mirror, a Christmas candle (unlit for safety, but still decorative), and a dish of cinnamon sticks or dried orange slices.
