An open-plan kitchen design makes for an extremely versatile and functional space.

There are plenty of design tricks to get the most out of your space and make it work hard. We've put together a few top tips below to get you started.

Zone off

Create different areas by separating the functions of the room – cooking, eating and relaxing. Rugs, pieces of furniture and bold painted walls work well to differentiate.

Divide the space

Islands or peninsulas also creates a great natural room break at floor level without interrupting the flow or blocking out light. Put together a cohesive design by choosing the same colour for your island. Or, alternatively, if you want to break up the space and divide it, painting an island in a different colour or opting for a contrast worktop works well.

The work triangle

The 'work triangle' is to key to creating a successful working space, with the sink and cooker on different walls. This means you'll have plenty of prep space, but you'll also keep appliances important to maximising functionality within an easy distance of each other. If the kitchen includes an island or pennisula, use this as one element of the formation.

Seperate dining

Include space for a separate dining area or breakfast bar that runs on from an island, with bar stools positioned for relaxed, informal meals. An overhanging worktop is all that is requires to create a functioning breakfast bar. 

Light up

Oversized or clever lighting is key in an open-plan space. Plan this carefully using spots, directional lights and pendants in all areas. Placing pendant lights above an island creates a statement feature out of the space, whilst under counter lighting creates a relaxed and informal ambience.
