Tipped as the top tile trend for 2020, the fishscale can be a surprisingly versatile choice for your kitchen or bathroom design.

Topps Tiles has announced that the fishscale tile is its Tile of the Year for 2020. Chosen in collaboration with Kate Watson Smyth of the UK's number one interiors blog Mad About The House, Topps has revealed that its Syren tile in Midnight Blue is the one set to make waves in our kitchen and bathroom designs over the coming year.

There's one thing we didn't appreciate until now about the fishscale tile - its versatility. Check out some of the clever layout pattern ideas and different looks that you can create - all worth considering once you've plumped on giving your kitchen or bathroom a fishscale makeover.

1. Fanning upwards

By arranging the tiles with the widest part at the top, the fishscale takes on Art Deco sensibilities. Team with golden brass finishes for a luxe touch that harks back to this glamorous era.

2. Fanning downwards

When tiled with the widest part at the bottom, the fishscale takes on more of a Moroccan feel. In this kitchen, a mix of Syren's colours have been used for a statement splashback.

3. Side to side

Orienting these tiles horizontally creates a more traditional fishscale look. Try this design if your bathroom feels narrow, as it will create an optical illusion that flatters the proportions of your space.

4. Interlinked

Creating a more intricate look, this wavy, interlinked laying pattern offers a fresh and contemporary way to use this tile. We love the use of pink coloured grout here to create a youthful, exciting feature of the splashback.
