Using up spare paint is a budget-friendly way to revamp everything from furniture to plant pots while reducing waste and making use of what you’ve already got.

Dulux shows us how to achieve a trendy dipped chair effect which is perfect for using up odds and ends of paint left over from your home decorating.

What you need

  • Sandpaper
  • Tape measure
  • Masking tape
  • brushes

How to:

  1. Sand your chair all over with fine sandpaper to get a smooth finish then wipe clean.
  2. Prime your chair with a single coat of wood primer.
  3. Apply two coats of your chosen paint all over the chair using a paintbrush.
  4. Measure how high up the chair you'd like your dipped effect to be, then wrap masking tape around the points you have measured.
  5. For a smooth finish, lightly sand between coats and wipe again.
  6. Paint on your second colour, letting the first coat dry before applying the second one.
  7. Remove the masking tape to reveal the final effect.

Top tip: The lines don’t have to be the same height either, so play around to find a design to suit you.
