Interior stylist and lifestyle blogger at We Love Home, Maxine Brady, had always dreamed of owning a beautiful garden in which she and her Maltese terrier Teddy could enjoy all summer long. Unfortunately, her new home – a two-bedroom Victorian terrace – had been unoccupied for seven years leaving the awkward L-shape garden overgrown and unattractive.

With the help of friend and landscape gardener, Thea Pritchard, Maxine has overhauled her small overgrown outdoor space to create a modern urban oasis with a dash of Moroccan style. If your garden is small or an awkward shape, steal Maxine’s simple but clever design tricks to increase your outdoor space

Add castors to planters

Optimise a compact area with outdoor storage boxes

A neat painted bench and storage box slots in perfectly by the back door.

Hang planters high above the ground

Hanging planters are safe from slugs and make a style statement – and they don’t compromise floor space.

Hang a large outdoor mirror in a narrow space

Hanging a large outdoor mirror in the narrowest part of a small garden will reflect light and increase the feeling of space.

Create a secluded spot

If your garden is L-shaped, a neatly tucked away pergola is ideal for extra privacy when relaxing outside, especially if you have a city garden.
