By re-planning the space, Sarah Ferguson has created a sleek, family bathroom that’s ideal for her two young sons.

Enticed by the green, open spaces and great transport links into London, Sarah Ferguson and her husband, Ben, made the move from the capital to Walton-on-Thames in Surrey. A few years on, and now with two young sons, Joseph and Henry, they decided to look for a home that would work for the long-term, and were lucky enough to find one big enough to fit the needs of their growing boys.

‘This house gave us good-sized rooms and a larger garden,’ says Sarah. ‘After looking through hundreds of properties online, it was by far the best. The previous owners had lived in it for 40 years and, although they had obviously taken great care of their home, it just wasn’t to our taste – there was lots of peach everywhere.’

Seeing an opportunity to remodel the house, the couple consulted an architect to discuss having an extension and a complete refurbishment. This involved building into the side return and creating a kitchen-diner and a master bedroom with an en suite on the first floor. ‘We also needed a family bathroom for the boys,’ explains Sarah, ‘who are still at an age where they enjoy baths, although we wanted a shower, too.’

To be able to fit everything into the space, the airing cupboard was removed. ‘I think I was probably overly cautious, as I realise now that I should have chosen a longer bath,’ says Sarah, ‘but I was worried about the size of the gap between it and the shower cubicle.’

To create much-needed storage, Sarah installed a wall-hung vanity unit, and opted for a classic WC and bath with the clean lines she was looking for. ‘The room needed another dimension as the sanitaryware and furniture are very simple,’ she explains. ‘I knew coloured tiles would make a difference, but I didn’t want anything too dark, so I chose peppermint-green. Although not a strong shade, they’re still light without being too wishy-washy, and I combined plain and embossed designs to give texture and depth.’

With the building work taking just over six months, Sarah had plenty of time to think about the finishing touches. ‘I’ve taken the decorating side slowly,’ she says, ‘because I wanted to make sure that I got it right and that all the rooms fitted together – and the bathroom has turned out to be one of the rooms I’m most happy with. As green is one of my favourite colours, I’ve repeated it in different shades throughout the house. ‘The boys are really happy with the space and love having a power shower and playing in the bath,’ she adds. ‘In fact, it’s such a lovely place, I spend quite a lot of time in here myself – it’s great for a relaxing soak.’
