With a brief to create a main family bathroom for a couple with 3 teenage children in this Victorian property in Wandsworth, these owners approacheddesign studio Day True as part of an on‐going refurbishment. We spoke to the homeowners about the process and what they learnt along the way.

How did you begin your bathroom renovation process?

"Every bathroom space is different, the layout and spatial planning is always the first step and in some cases the room dictates the layout. In this property the shower area was already formed so it was a natural decision to keep it in the same location. The main detail we changed was the door position, the existing space had an angled door from the corridor, by squaring off the angle we created more space in the bathroom, allowing us to change the layout of bath and basin."

"We were able to move the basin to the wall in front of the door which created more space for a free‐standing bath from BC Designs, which became the main focal point as you enter the room. We also blocked up a small window in the shower area, but used the void to create a recess for storage."

Were there any challenges to overcome in the design of this space?

"With this bathroom there were quite a few unknown factors, including whether the step could be removed from the shower due to the waste position? And how much would we gain exactly from straightening up the door? As this would only be known once the builders started ripping out the current bathroom."

Which materials did you choose and why?

"We implemented hand‐finishes in a subtle way to this bathroom to give it the character and softness it needed to create a moody and inclusive space. In the shower area we opted for handmade new terracotta tiles with an oxidised finish to make a subtle change in colour and warmth. By using Mortex on the floor and within the shower niche it gave a natural texture and a much softer feeling underfoot compared to tiles."

"We designed open shelves within the vanity unit as we were tight on space, the open finish allowed us to show off the beautiful walnut interior and for the top of the vanity unit and top of the toilet cistern we used a Carrara marble."

Tell us about the accessories, such as the taps, mirror and radiator that you chose...

The house was a period property so it was important that the design was sympathetic to the era. We opted for black detailing in the brassware, the handles on furniture, shower frame, accessories and the heated towel rail. The cross head style taps are a timeless design, having them in matt black, created contrast.

What do you think is the most successful design feature?

"I think the most successful design feature of this bathroom is the mix of texture, colour and materials, its certainly not a bland bathroom, but equally it is timeless, it feels warm and homely, encouraging the user to spend time and relax."

What’s your top design tip for anyone renovating their bathroom?

"My tips would be to be brave, make sure your home is filled with things and materials you love, you will enjoy it much more."
