Our lovely style editor, Jessica Taverner, talks to us about her favourite decorating ideas of the season, which trends we can wave goodbye to and shares her inspiration for this year's Good Homes roomsets at spring's Ideal Home Show.

Which key trends should we be looking out for in spring/summer 2018?

Japanese-inspired interiors and spa-style bathrooms are set to bring a sense of calm to our hectic lives. I’ve seen lots of style fusions around this trend, such as Japanordic (Japanese and Nordic), Japandi (Japanese and Scandi) and even Japaneasy (Japanese and an easy lifestyle).

Keep an eye out for the “return of the decades”, too – think '70s retro revival and '80s glamour – each given a modern twist with playful colours and mixed metallic accents.

The houseplant craze took the interior design world by storm last year, and is set to be equally as huge in 2018. In particular, I’ve seen a surge in bold botanical prints on wallpaper and textiles, perfect for injecting life and fun into any space.

What trend would you like to see the back of in 2018?

Pineapple Trend George Home Ss18

Unicorns, flamingos and copper. Micro trends that rapidly spike in popularity tend to fizzle out as quickly as they came in. Copper has been replaced with brass and unicorns and flamingos were pushed aside by the humble pineapple – a micro trend that has risen through the ranks to become a hero motif.

What are your top home styling tips?

A very well known trick in the interiors industry is to cluster products in groups of three – it sounds simple but it works every time.

When styling the rooms for the Good Homes front cover shoots, I also find that taking time to step back and look at the room from a different angle makes such a difference. It helps you spot areas that need height or texture, or that you’ve cluttered with too many items. Taking a photo once you feel a room or display is complete makes you see it from a completely different perspective, as you analyse it like you would a picture in a magazine, rather than a familiar corner of your home.

Which interiors pieces best represent SS18 and what should we definitely buy this season?

Oliver Bonas Homeware Large Rose Gold Pebble Wall Mirror

High street brands and supermarkets have really impressed me this season.

They’re all being very bold and pushing the boundaries of design, creating ranges of quirky homewares at an affordable price point – excellent if you want to experiment with a new style.

If you buy one thing, I would go for a statement, shapely mirror – they are ideal for an instant uplift. Marks and Spencer, Oliver Bonas and Amara are just a few brands that have a variety of quirky, eye-catching designs.

What design elements have inspired this year’s roomsets?

Green Plants Trend Ss18 Argos Inhabit Collection

This year, the Good Homes roomsets will showcase the six biggest interiors trends for 2018.

We have carefully selected each one by looking at specialist forecasting (how we use our homes today and how we want them to feel) and popular search terms (what we’re most inspired by online), plus visiting lots of press previews for new interiors ranges and talking to the brands we know you love.

Expect to see lots of houseplants, tech-savvy ideas and touches of elegance.
