As a colour, blue is soothing, natural, cool and calm - no wonder it's been found to be the colour of choice across the globe!

It's one of the more common hues to find in a home, but if you're having trouble trying to balance a blue-based scheme, we've got some tips to help you perfect your space.

Pick the right room

When it comes to colour psychology, blue has a lot to offer. It's qualities don't really rule it out from any room, so you could easily include it in a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living space, or wherever you fancy really!

However, you ay want to consider the effect of the facing of the room before you opt for blue. North-facing rooms get a cold light throughout the day, which may contribute to a chilly, less-than-cosy feel in an overly blue room.

Opt for a tonal palette

As one way to balance out the cold nature of blue, you could consider using a tonal palette that teams icier shades with warmer tones. This bedrooms cheme from Little Greene uses a dark blue paint for the woodwork, but teams it with teal tones that have more yellow in them, which helps to warm up the scheme overall.

Add warming elements

Whether it's colourful accessories in red, orange or yellow, or naturally warm materials such as wood, jute or terracotta, using blues in combination with more rustic touches will help to ground it in a cosier atmosphere.

Create a coastal-inspired feel

Shades of blue lend themselves to a nautical or coastal inspired look. The modern way to achieve chic coastal style is to introduce this with a subtle mix of colour, materials and small nautical-inspired accessories, rather than to over-egg deckchair stripes, seagull motifs and ornamental crabs.

Go dark and moody

Decorating with black has been a big trend in recent years, but deep, dark blue offers a more palatable option for some homeowners who are nervous about turning to the dark side. Think about finishes, textures and contrasts that lift a dark scheme and help to add depth to it to avoid the space feeling too cave-like.

Use as a vibrant accent
