Gas fires can be a stylish and energy-efficient addition to heating your home, but what should you consider before installing one?

A gas fire is a great option to provide the warmth and ambience of a real fire but with the controlability of gas and none of the high maintenance solid fuel, that can be expensive and inconvienant. Head of flame technologies at Valor, Jonathan Smith, shares what you need to consider before investing in a gas fire.

1. Consider the location

If you're installing a fire for the first time, ensure you consider where it's placed within the room. Whilst you don't always need a chimney, you still need a way to allow the gas fumes of the fire to escape safely. If you don't have a chimney, a balance flue fire could be the right solution, as they can be integrated into your wall and connect to the outside with a concentric flue.

2. Cost

Gas fires vary when it comes to price depending which one you wish to install, such as a balanced flue or convector. If you're looking for a balanced flue fire, you can expect the price to start from £1,000. If you're looking to buy a conventional gas fire they can start from just a couple of hundred pounds, depending on which style you opt for.

3. Expert installation

If you're planning to install a gas fire, do not be tempted to save money and try and install yourself. You need to ensure any work is carried out by a qualified Gas Safe registered installer. It's also good practice to get a couple of different quotes from local recognised retailers and installers. Make sure the quotes include all relevant information so they are comparable and don't be afraid to also ask the supplier to provide references from previous customers.

4. Ask the retailers

Ask your retailer about sales services such as warranties, material and workmanship. Some products can look very similar but can have subtle differences that make one model better value for money – your retailer will be able to explain the differences. Also, some manufacturers offer extended warranties, which gives you more security when purchasing your gas fire.
