Just because you don't own your home doesn't mean you can't make it your own. Adding your own personal touch to a rental property can be a bit of a minefield, however we've got a few styling tips for updating your living room that might help you get started.

Zone off the space

Just because you can't do any structural work to your rental property doesn't mean you can't tactically zone off spaces. Using a room divider can be a great way of adding style and functionality to your living room. Or, why not get creative and build your own divider and cover with a wall of plants?

Savvy storage

Avoid clutter by opting for savvy storage solutions. We love this Flippa coffee table from Made as it lifts up to create a mini dining table as well as having lots of handy storage.

Other ideas include a velvet storage pouffe, a wall mounted desk if you're in need of a work space or a ladder shelf to create the overall look of more space.

Hang temporary wallpaper

We think that this could possibly be the most genius invention for renters, introducing... peel and stick wallpaper! NuWallpaper has lots of amazing designs, which you simply stick on the wall. Iit can be removed whenever you decide to move out without damage.

If you're not keen on the colour of your living room, use this temporary wallpaper to create a stunning feature wall.

Switch up window dressings

Curtains or blinds can certainly change the look and style of an entire room. Simply take your existing ones down, store them somewhere safe for if and when you decide to move on and let your interior imagination run wild!

Create focal points

Creating focal points is a great styling tip for drawing the eye around the room. A great idea is to invest in a statement accent chair and to create a reading corner full of stylish accessories, which reflect your personal style.

Another focal point could be a statement coffee table. As it'll most likely be placed in the centre of your living room, it will immediately set the tone for the rest of the space.

Change light fittings

Lighting is a key element of any living room space. Bring in your personal style by switching up the fittings. If your interior style is industrial, opt for a black pendant light, however if you want to add a touch of glamour, a chandelier is always a winner in our eyes!

Consider your TV

However unappealing they might be, a TV is a permanent fixture in most households, so it's important to try and find a way to style it to suit your living space.

Mounting it on the wall can be the most unobtrusive option as it doesn't require a bulky TV stand. Why not create a stylish display below it just like on this Modish Living sideboard.
