Bedroom in need of a makeover, but don't have the budget? Then try these small, affordable changes that can add up to a huge transformation.

As it's not an entertaining space in our homes, it's all too easy to neglect our bedrooms. But it's the first thing you see in the morning when you wake up, and the last thing you see when you go to sleep, so don't you deserve an inspiring space?

If you're decorating on a budget, why not try these wallet-friendly ideas and see how easy it is to completely transform your bedroom without breaking into the piggy bank.

1. Install bedside wall lights

Wall-mounted lighting is a huge trend in bedroom design – not only does it offer up useful task lighting, it also clears space on the bedside table for your alarm clock, book and cup of tea in the morning. You don't have to fork out for the expense of an electrician to have one installed either – look for corder designs which can be affixed to the wall and plugged into a normal electrical socket.

2. Change the headboard

A new bed can transform a space, but it's a sizeable investment piece too. If you want to pack in more design drama, why not just swap out your headboard? This headboard from Very is a real statement piece, but, at £299, it's around half the price of a entire bed in a similar style.

3. Get creative with paint

Re-decorating the walls isn't the only way to use paint to change the look of your room. It's a growing trend on Instagram to paint floorboards in a bold colour – and don't forget the ceiling can also be an effective canvas. What's better, the floor and ceiling are more cost effective to paint than the walls, so if you're on a tight budget, it's a worthy consideration.

4. Refresh your worktop

Large format rugs can be expensive, but in a bedroom, your bed will usually take up the majority of the floor space. Opt for runners instead, either at the base or the sides of the bed to give you something soft to step out onto first thing in the morning.

If you are looking for a larger style of rug, consider layering smaller rugs on top of each other. Even though you'll need to buy more than one, it's likely to be far cheaper than a bigger rug.

5. Change window fittings

Window dressings can completely change your experience of a bedroom, and off-the-peg options are budget-friendly to change. Why not introduce new colour or pattern; or just ensure you've got curtains with blackout lining? We also advocate layering up window dressings - a blind with a curtain, for example, or a blackout curtain with a lighter voile. This gives you better control over light and privacy in your room.
